Frequently asked questions
Do I need to file a self-assessment return?
You generally need to file if you're self-employed, a company director, have untaxed income, or your income (or a partner's) exceeds certain HMRC thresholds. We can confirm whether you're required to register.
What's the deadline for self-assessment?
Online returns for a tax year are due by 31 January the following year, with the tax owed due the same date. We build in time to review your return before it's filed.
Is it more tax-efficient to take dividends or salary as a director?
It depends on your company's profits, your other income and current tax rates and thresholds. We model both routes and recommend the mix that works best for your situation.
